Hanım [Madame] (1989)
Director: Halit Refiğ
101 minutes
Turkish; English subtitles

An ode to Istanbul, Hanım [Madame] exemplifies director Halit Refiğ’s relation to tradition. An old Istanbulite piano teacher, Madame Olcay (Yıldız Kenter), upon learning that she does not have very long to live, sets out to find a new home for her cat. At the same time she struggles in an attempt to keep her timber villa standing. Yet, the period’s conflict of generations and Istanbul’s harshly changing urban identity, leave her to confront a most displeasing prospect.

A special feature of the film is its use of compositions by Cemal Reşit Rey and Adnan Saygun, who were among the first classical music composers in Turkey.
