It was the beginning of what Theodore Roosevelt called “the American century.” The 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair was intended to be the biggest and best world’s fair ever. And it was. This documentary looks at an important time in American history through a series of compelling, intimate and entertaining stories.

Formally known as the “Louisiana Purchase Exposition,” the fair was designated as the centennial celebration of the United States’ purchase of the Louisiana territory from France in 1803. Both a continuation of trade fairs common in the region and the first public display of consumer goods and popular culture, the exhibition is one many that has a lingering architectural impact. Even though most structures were built to be temporary, the Palace of Fine Arts today serves as the Saint Louis Art Museum.
