Reflecting on projects made in Cairo in cooperation with Townhouse Gallery over the last several years, and in London (the Edgware Road Project) with Serpentine Gallery, artist Susan Hefuna will focus on her works referring to the people and public spaces of Cairo and London.

Hefuna’s work reflects experiences in between cultures and dealing with cross-cultural codes, employing a variety of media including drawing, installation, photography, video and performance. She constantly plays with what images mean and how they work, creating dream-like spaces where viewers can attach a wide array of significances to indicators of time and location. Hefuna hijacks the viewer beyond space and time and, from a taste of the undetectable, generates an arrangement of a direction of sorts.

In fall 2011, Hefuna exhibited several series of new drawings and sculptures produced during a residency at Pi Artworks, İstanbul. These works reflect her personal experiences, inspirations from the spirit of İstanbul, and the architectural relationship between İstanbul and Cairo.

The talk will be held in English.
