Thursday Cinema’s September-December program begins with the screening of the 1938 documentary Olympia. A total of 12 films, documentaries and features focusing on the impacts of international mega-events, including world fairs, world cups and olympic games, on the urban fabric will be screened in the Auditorium at SALT Galata.

Commissioned by the Olympic Committee to document the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Leni Riefenstahl’s two-part documentary Olympia features footage and highlights including the pentathlon, American athlete Glenn Morris’ gold medal-winning decathlon, and the closing ceremony. The film features particular focus upon the perfected physiques of the competitors in celebration of the achievements of human strength. Riefenstahl developed a technique during the filming of Olympia leading way for future expectations of Olympics’ documentation. The artistic skills in visualization and editing retained Riefenstahl’s cinematography as revolutionary for the film industry, awarding the documentary “Best Film” at the 1938 Venice Film Festival.
