Navine G. Khan-Dossos will give a talk about her work Scenes from a Pre-Crime (Performance for Security Guards) that she produced for The Universe Flickers. The artist responds to the 150 year-long history of Siniossoglou Apartment, today SALT Beyoğlu, by a mural painting reminding the building’s original use of space as retail on street level and domestic residences on its upper floors. The work operates as both a performance and an intervention that the artist has developed within six weeks spent here. Referencing the existing ceiling paintings, Khan-Dossos’ light wash monochromatic mural reintroduces the domestic realm into the exhibition space, and proposes that the private domain can be just as much a place of crime or incident as the public space.

Khan-Dossos is a visual artist working between London and Athens, and currently a tutor in the MA program at the Dutch Art Institute in Arnhem. Her practice often responds to a sense of place, and increasingly takes the form of murals and site-specific installations. She uses the medium and its history to ask fundamental questions about the ways in which we see, understand, and represent the world around us, most particularly in relation with the artist’s training in history of Islamic art and architecture. Khan-Dossos often refers to her practice as “Aniconism” as a way to think about the non-figurative means of envisioning.

This public talk will be held in English. Second in the series Conversations, The Universe Flickers is on view until December 30 at SALT Beyoğlu.
