This short-film -commissioned for Danish national TV- takes the viewer on a trip on the River Meriç, which defines the border between Turkey and Greece. Every year thousands of migrants try to cross the river, and every year many drown in their attempt to enter Europe. The film is narrated by the Turkish fisherman Harim who has often seen migrants in peril. Harim is in a moral dilemma because the current laws forbid him to help the migrants in any way.

Persian and English; English subtitles

Promised Land depicts the final stage of a group of young men’s dramatic journey from war-torn regimes in Iran and Afghanistan to lives as refugees in Europe. Reza and his three-year-old son live in the ruins of an old building, while they wait and hope for an opportunity to make it to England. Mohammed, Jafar and Hasan will do anything to cross the 35 km Channel from Calais to reach the UK. After several dangerous experiments with trucks, they finally have a foolproof plan - which involves swimming and a ship. The only problem is: Hasan can’t swim. By combining evocative cinematography with footage shot by the immigrants themselves, the film provides an insight into their close friendships, their hopes, their dreams and their coping mechanisms for life’s miseries.
