Çıplak Vatandaş [The Naked Citizen] (1985)
Director: Başar Sabuncu
82 minutes
Turkish; English subtitles

The first film of late director Başar Sabuncu, Çıplak Vatandaş [The Naked Citizen] sets itself apart from films of a similar nature because of its elements that estrange the audience. With the wife of the character played by Şener Şen pregnant with their fifth child, the film depicts the life of a low-income white-collar worker who, unable to cope with his overwhelming distress, throws himself stark naked onto the streets where he soon becomes a media hero.

Detailing new journalistic approaches, the boom in advertising, and Prime Minister Turgut Özal’s prime-time TV programs titled İcraatin İçinden [Inside the Activity], the film sketches an impressive panorama of Turkey in the 1980s.
