Dare mo shiranai [Nobody Knows] (2004)
Director: Hirokazu Koreeda
141 minutes
Japanese; Turkish and English subtitles

Based on the true events endured by four siblings abandoned by their mother Keiko and left to fend for themselves in a tiny Tokyo apartment, Dare mo shiranai [Nobody Knows] (2004) displays the purest example of young resilience. The initial impression of childish games, enhanced by Keiko as she isolates her children and keeps them from school, soon dissolves when she dissappears completely. Attempting to survive in their own universe by their own devised rules, only 12 year-old Akira is able to face the outside world, and the harrowing truth of providing for his family in a life that remains between four walls.

The film was nominated for the Palme d’Or at 57th Cannes Film Festival, with Yûya Yagira receiving the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Akira.
