The contemporary dance research and lecture-performance series of the aeigis group, founded by artists Şima Uyar and Ezgi Türker in 2019, aims to keep track of the productions of significant figures in the world history of dance. Following their work on Yvonne Rainer and Merce Cunningham, the duo presents Mektup [Letter] (2022) as part of The 90s Onstage exhibition. The work addresses Yeşil Üzümler Dance Theater, which was founded in 1991 and staged its first performance in 1992 at the Manastır building.

“What would it be like to look back at the works Kassandra [Cassandra] (1994-1995), Kanepe-Sedir-Çekyat [Couch-Daybed-Sofa] trilogy (1995) presented at the Assos Performing Arts Festival, Düet (1995) and Yeşil Üzümler Yenmez Zannetmiştik [We Thought Green Grapes Cannot Be Eaten] (1992) and write a letter to Yeşil Üzümler of the 90s?” Following a subjective point of view based on this question, Mektup [Letter] reinterprets Yeşil Üzümler Dance Theater’s productions that reflect the spirit of the decade while offering a closer look into the dance theater company’s history.

Following the presentation on November 6, Mektup [Letter] will be re-performed on Sunday, December 4 between 17.00-17.30 at Salt Beyoğlu on Floor 3, with the participation of Yeşil Üzümler members. The free-admission program is open to everyone.

aeigis was founded by Şima Uyar and Ezgi Türker in 2019. Şima Uyar received her undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate degrees in control and computer engineering. She has studied classical ballet and contemporary dance since childhood, received certificates in dance, and participated in various workshops in this field. Ezgi Türker received her BA in Political Science and International Relations from Boğaziçi University and her MA in Political Science from Central European University. She attended several training and workshops in dance. Trio F5, realized as part of their lecture-performance series on contemporary dance history, focused on Yvonne Rainer and her work “No Manifesto.” In 2019, they staged Heads/Tails, a performance on Merce Cunningham and his chance choreography method, on the occasion of Cunningham’s 100th birthday. In 2020, the duo launched PURESPACE together with Ufuk Şenel to continue their artistic production.

The 90s Onstage is organized as part of L’Internationale’s Our Many Europes program.
