Shedding light on daily life and social history, the photo archive of the Romano family—a Levantine family from İzmir—is now accessible at archives.saltresearch.org.
Fernando (1923–2011), born in Karşıyaka, İzmir, to Fernande and Jozef Romano, attended İzmir Saint Joseph High School and pursued university education in France before returning to teach at his former school in İzmir. He later joined his father’s maritime shipping company, but soon after began working at the İzmir branch of Alex Dabcovitch’s company. He also served as the Secretary General of the İzmir Maritime Shippers’ Association from 1957 to 1964. In 1964, he relocated to Istanbul with his wife, Rita (1922–2017), and their two sons, Alain (1949–1999) and Jojo (1956–1976), and began working at Dabcovitch’s maritime agency located on the Galata Quay. The family initially settled in Şişli before moving to Yeşilköy. In 1982, Fernando returned to İzmir with his family to manage Deniz Kontuarı Ltd, a company founded through a partnership between Besi, Dabcovitch, and Makzume.
Comprising Fernando Romano’s photographs from his life in İzmir and Istanbul, as well as travels to France, Switzerland, and Greece, the archive offers a visual account of a Levantine family from the 1950s to the 1980s, along with insights into maritime agency activities of the period.
