Organized as part of The Lives of Animals at Salt Beyoğlu, Where Breath Leads explores how humans observe, care for, and coexist with animals. The program draws its title from the etymological root of the word animal, derived from the Latin anima—meaning “breath” or “soul”—alluding to the shared conditions of aliveness and vulnerability that connect all sentient beings. Focusing on the ethical, emotional, and sensory dimensions of interspecies relationships, the selection brings together films that question the ways we define life, value, and interdependence across species.

Andrea Arnold’s documentary Cow looks into the world and daily life of a dairy cow. In Butenland, Marc Pierschel documents a former dairy farmer and an animal rights activist as they transform a traditional farm into a sanctuary where cows and other animals live freely, no longer treated as commodities. Kala Azar by Janis Rafa follows a couple who collect the bodies of deceased pets, offering a reflection on rituals of care, mourning, and our connection to other species. Set in a small urban garden, David Allen’s My Garden of a Thousand Bees captures the complex and often-overlooked world of bees. La Panthère des neiges [The Velvet Queen] by Vincent Munier and Marie Amiguet follows a journey deep into the Tibetan Plateau—one of the last sanctuaries of wildlife.

Together, these films offer a lens through which to reconsider our place within multispecies communities and imagine relationships grounded in attentiveness, empathy, and shared vulnerability.

Where Breath Leads is programmed by Joanna Zielińska together with Alâ Taleb from Salt. The free-admission screenings are open to everyone.
