Censorship in art and literature in Turkey from the 1970s to today



Ataol Behramoğlu graduated from the University of Ankara, Department of Russian Language and Literature in 1966. His poems were published in Ataç, Dost, Evrim, Halkın Dostları, Militan, Papirüs, Şiir Sanatı, Yapraklar, Yeni Dergi and Yeni Gerçek. Between 1995-1999 Behramoğlu served as the chairman of the Turkish Writers’ Association. He teaches at İstanbul Aydın University and continues to write for Cumhuriyet.

Banu Karaca is a Visiting Scholar at Sabanci University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. After receiving her M.A. from Goethe University (Frankfurt/Main, Germany) she studied cultural anthropology at the Graduate Center of The City University of New York. Karaca is part of “Black Ribbon,” a research platform that documents and analyzes censorship in the arts throughout Turkey.
