SALT Beyoğlu, Walk-in Cinema

subREAL formed in Romania in 1990, right after the “television revolution” that ended the dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu in 1989, by artist Dan Mihălţianu and art historian Călin Dan in order to “exorcise the residue of the decades of communist oppression.” The group was shortly after joined by architect and photographer Iosif Király.

On the occasion of the exhibition subREAL, which is on view at SALT Beyoğlu from May 8 until August 11, the members of the group will talk about the artistic practice of subREAL as a whole. With the participation of Dan Mihălţianu, who left the group to pursue an individual career in 1993, this artist talk will present a rare opportunity to hear the full story of subREAL.

The talk will be held in English.

subREAL at SALT Beyoğlu is organized with the contribution of the Romanian Cultural Institute in İstanbul (ICR) and is part of an ongoing collaboration between SALT and ICR, İstanbul, initiated in 2011.

The exhibition subREAL Retrospect at MNAC, Bucharest in 2012 was curated by Raluca Velisar and organized together with the artists Călin Dan, Iosif Király and Dan Mihălțianu.
