Parallel events organised for the exhibition Modern Turkey’s Discovery of the Ottoman Heritage: The Ali Saim Ülgen Archive continue with a talk of architectural restorator expert Emre Madran.

Cities are transformed to meet changing and diversifing needs of the society, by the development of architectural styles or for other reasons, like failure to preserve the foundational buildings or natural disasters. The process embodies the loss of cultural values for creating new ones. Ankara is no exception. In his talk, Madran will focus on the design and construction of the public buildings in Ulus and its surroundings after the 1920s. He will evaluate both the loss of former buildings to the “public works” as well as the renovation of the first Republican buildings by their destruction or renovation beyond recognition.

Madran worked for the Directorate of the Vakıfs and the Ministry of Culture. He currently teaches part-time in the Restoration Department of Architecture Faculty of Middle East Technical University. His research focuses on the history of conservation in the Ottoman and Republican period, and includes specifities such as traditional construction materials and construction techniques, conservation regulations, field management and managerial and financial structuring.

The talk will be held in Turkish.
