Garden Launch at SALT Beyoğlu

Salt Beyoğlu

September 10, 2011

Saturday, September 10 will be the official launch of the Garden at SALT Beyoğlu. In collaboration with artist/architect Fritz Haeg and Pelin Demireli, SALT will be organizing a program of workshops, film screenings and a talk by Fritz Haeg.

In the context of the Garden launch, an open all-ages workshop will be held from 15.00 to 17.00. Participants will join Haeg and Demireli as they develop a new planting space in the Garden. At 17.00, Haeg will be giving a Who’s in town? talk in the Walk-in Cinema. Throughout the day, Haeg’s Edible Estates films documenting garden projects in London and Los Angeles will be screened in the Walk-in Cinema.

On the fourth floor of SALT Beyoğlu, what was once an open roof area has been renovated to form an enclosed greenhouse Garden. Fritz Haeg was commissioned to develop an edible planting project to act as the hub for an ongoing education and cultural program. Since 2005, Haeg has been creating a series of gardens that produce food in unlikely urban spaces known as Edible Estates in partnership with local organizations and families.

Pelin Demireli leads gardening and cooking workshops for children with organizations including Sulukule Volunteer Association, Şişli Ecological Market, Kuzguncuk Elementary School, Kınalı Summer Camp and Minik Fırın. She is also engaged in a network of local farmers and seed swappers working to make traditional seeds available both within and outside of İstanbul.
