In the Shadow of Oil

What does the oil economy do to contemporary art? Anne Szefer Karlsen will investigate how oil economy has been decisive in shaping the art field in Norway as we know today, and will suggest rethinking how we understand regions. The presentation will circle the quite spectacular public art projects on oil platforms in the North Sea from the 1980s represented through the groundbreaking combined drilling and production platforms Gullfaks A, B and C.

Anne Szefer Karlsen is a curator, writer and editor. Her interests are in artistic and curatorial collaborations as well as developing the language that surrounds art productions of today, linguistically, spatially and structurally.

She is curator for Skulpturbiennalen [The Sculpture Biennale] 2015 hosted by the Vigeland Museum, Oslo, and was curator for Lofoten International Art Festival – LIAF (with Bassam El Baroni and Eva González-Sancho) titled Just what is it that makes today so familiar, so uneasy?, 2013. She acted as Associate Curator for Research and Encounters for Biennale Bénin 2012, and was Director of Hordaland Art Centre in Bergen, Norway (2008-2014).

The talk will be held in English.
