SALT Beyoğlu, Walk-in Cinema

Oraib Toukan’s lecture scrutinizes the afterlife of two-seconds of material that Palestinian photographer and cinematographer Hani Jowharieh shot during the aftermath of the 1967 war with Israel. The frame echoes a detail from Caravaggio’s Death of the Virgin. A woman’s body lies dead on the floor, bloodstained, eyes open, her profile slightly shying away from the camera. The image serves as a foil for, and contrast with, the traffic of images that came out of Gaza, Palestine, in the summer of 2014.

This lecture is organized in the context of the exhibition A Century of Centuries on show at SALT Beyoğlu from March 10-May 24.

The lecture will be held in English.

Oraib Toukan is an artist. She is head of, and teaches at, the Arts Division and Media Studies department at Bard College in Al Quds University, Palestine.
