Leading up to the “Taksim Belongs to Pedestrians” workshop, to be held October 1 at SALT Beyoğlu, Korhan Gümüş will evaluate the Taksim Square pedestrianization project - officially announced by the City Council of İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality on September 16 - with a consideration of the square’s historical background.
Korhan Gümüş, founder and president of the Human Settlement Association, has worked previously as the director of the İstanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency and the Urban Projects and Local Governments Research Center at İstanbul Bilgi University. He served on the host committee of the United Nations Habitat 2 conference in 1996 before working as a project coordinator of disaster houses following the 1999 İzmit earthquake, and project director of the 2001 Galata rehabilitation project. An active member of the İstanbul Foundation for Arts, Presentation and Research, Foundation for the Social and Economic History of Turkey, the İstanbul Metropolitan Branch of Chamber of Architects, and WWF Turkey, Gümüş presents a weekly radio show with Aysim Türkmen on Açık Radyo called Metropolitika. He has contributed to publications including Milliyet, Milliyet Sanat, Cumhuriyet, Bilim ve Teknik, Radikal, Taraf, Zaman, Toplum ve Bilim, Birikim and İstanbul Dergisi.
