Created for the 1939 New York World’s Fair as part of the City of Tomorrow exhibit, The City (1939) is a seminal documentary film distinguished for the organic integration of narration, cinematography, and music composed by Aaron Copland. Written by Pare Lorentz, known for his movies about the New Deal, the documentary offers brief insight into the problems of contemporary urban environment in contrast to the superior social and physical conditions of planned communities.
