Developed in the wake of her 2008 publication, Le jour où mon père s’est tu [The Day My Father Went Silent], Virginie Linhart’s documentary recounts the rise and demise of Centre Universitaire Expérimental de Vincennes [Vincennes Experimental University Center]. Established in 1969 in Paris, this center was recognized as embodying the possibility of a unique educational system - a reflection and response to the student movement of May 1968.
Initially headed by Michel Foucault, the institution’s philosophy department hosted notable members including Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Lacan, Noam Chomsky, François Châtelet and director Linhart’s father Robert Linhart - founder of the Maoist movement in France. Renown as an institution operated without hierarcy, lecture formality and open to all students regardless of age and educational status, Vincennes Experimental University Center survived only until 1980 following its relocation to Saint-Denis, the current University of Paris 8.
Through archival materials, interviews with former students and faculty, personal childhood reflections, Linhart pays tribute to a memory and often forgotten history of the institution’s experimental nature.
