Out of the archive is an exercise in using sources and documents deviating from conventional narratives, and reflecting the multilayered nature of data at SALT Research. Accompanied by contemporary texts, five independent presentations underscore the diversity of SALT Research collections in an attempt to encourage curiosity and new inquiries.

SALT Research collections focus on the period from late 19th century to the present day with an emphasis on Turkey –primarily Istanbul– and the regions of Southeast Mediterranean and Southeast Europe. The collections include nearly two million online documents on the art history of post-1950 Turkey, development of architecture and design in Turkey since the beginning of the 20th century, and transformations of the society and the region from the last century of the Ottoman Empire to the Turkish Republic up until the 1990s. All documents are accessible at saltresearch.org.

Another program searching and sorting relations among documents in SALT Research archive collections by way of machine learning algorithms, Archive Dreaming by Refik Anadol, will be on view at SALT Galata between April 20 and June 11. As part of The Uses of Art: Final Exhibition, this immersive media installation transforms the gallery space on floor -1 into an all-encompassing environment that intertwines history with the contemporary, and challenges immutable concepts of the archive.

All texts are presented in Turkish.

Out of the archive took place at SALT Galata between February 23 and April 9.
