Asmara, capital of East African nation Eritrea, is recognized as an architectural gem. In Asmara Eritrea, the viewer is guided through the streets of this city by Asmarinos from different walks of life. As each individual describes his or her experience of the city, we see the location of memory in public spaces and the embedding of meaning within the urban environment. Through these guides’ narrations—a chorus of experiences personifying the nation—the country’s history from colonialism to independence comes to life.
