Citizen Jane: Battle for the City (2017)
Director: Matt Tyrnauer
92 minutes
English; Turkish subtitles

Screening for the first time in Turkey at SALT Galata, Citizen Jane: Battle for the City (2017) narrates activist Jane Jacobs’ successful struggle against urban planner Robert Moses’ redevelopment projects in New York City in the 1960s. Focusing on the conflicts between these two parties, the documentary traces the resistance organized by Jacobs opposing the construction plans of a highway that would pass through her own beloved neighbourhood of Greenwich Village. Presenting a historical example of citizens’ active resilience to reinstate their rights against destructive urban renewal plans, director Matt Tyrnauer presents the city of today through the lens of one of its greatest champions.
