Istanbul's New Airport: How Will It Change the City?
Salt Galata
October 25, 2017 19.00
SALT Galata, Workshop IV
Designed to accommodate up to 150 million passengers per year, Istanbul’s new international airport is one of the largest construction projects in the history of the Turkish Republic. Professor Max Hirsh’s “Who’s in town?” talk will address this site, which he states aims to solidify Istanbul’s stature as a global aviation hub.
Investigating how large-scale transportation projects like this are reconfiguring the city’s urban landscape, Hirsh will introduce the underlying motivations behind the expansion of Istanbul’s airport infrastructure. He will present this process as ultimately leading to paradigmatic shifts in architectural production and urban development throughout the city.
The talk will be held in English.
A leading expert on airports and urban infrastructure, Max Hirsh is a professor at the University of Hong Kong, and founder of the blog airporturbanism.com. He is the author of Airport Urbanism: Infrastructure and Mobility in Asia (2016), which models a new understanding of urban space that fundamentally reconceptualizes the relationship between global mobility patterns, transport infrastructure, and urban form.
