If A Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front (2011) tells the remarkable story of the rise and fall of the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) cell, deemed by the FBI as “USA’s number one domestic terrorism threat” at the beginning of 2000s. In his 2011 documentary film, director Marshall Curry focuses on the transformation and radicalization of one of the group’s critical members, Daniel McGowan, who was arrested in 2005 for his involvement in the group. Navigating a tumultuous period for environmentalism from 1995 to 2001, the film uncovers the most difficult questions involving ecology, activism, and society’s definition of terrorism through archival footage and intimate interviews with the ELF members.
