Westworld, 1973
16.00, Auditorium
Her, 2013
Two science-fiction films selected by Refik Anadol, whose Virtual Archive installation is at SALT Galata, will be screened in the Auditorium. Focusing on the human-artificial intelligence interaction, the program is comprised of Westworld, the inspiration behind the television series that debuted under the same title in 2016, and Her, the recipient of Academy Award and the Golden Globe for its screenplay by Spike Jonze.
Westworld depicts an artificial world where robots are in service for humanity, while Her describes an emotional relationship that a human develops with an operating system. Despite their 40-year gap in production, both films propose a variety of possibilities in the near future, in ways similar to Anadol’s Virtual Archive, produced as part of Archive Dreaming (2017).
The screening program is free. Reservations are not accepted.
Located on floor -1, Virtual Archive is open until February 25.

Westworld (1973)
Director: Michael Crichton
88 minutes
Written and directed by Michael Crichton, the film takes place in 1983 in an adults-only and extraordinarily realistic theme park called Delos. Designed to appear identical to humans, androids at the park are assigned roles that would provide the visitors a range of experiences unique to the worlds of “Wild West,” “Medieval Europe” and “Ancient Rome.” As complex in structure as living organisms, a series of system failures in these machines will disclose the dark truth behind this artificial environment.
Her (2013)
Director: Spike Jonze
126 minutes
Set in a near-future Los Angeles, the film portrays the relationship between an introvert writer, Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), and Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), his new artificially intelligent operating system personified through a female voice. A recent divorcee who spends most of his time alone, Theodore begins to re-organize his life with her vocal assistance using an earpiece device. An unlikely relationship develops when this playful and sensitive cyberbeing’s interest grows for Theodore beyond measure.
