Demi-vie à Fukushima [Half-Life in Fukushima] (2016)
Director: Mark Olexa and Francesca Scalisi
61 minutes
Japanese; Turkish and English subtitles

In the aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011, elderly Japanese farmer Naoto Matsumura survives a solitary existence within the radiation red zone. He refuses to leave the land of his ancestors, the abandoned town of Tomioka, to tend the animals left behind. As Matsumura wanders through the empty streets, he confronts the remnants of a lost society.

This captivating documentary film reveals the surreal scope and devastation of the nuclear tragedy, and the stubborn signs of life among the ruins: a touching encounter with an ostrich, a round of golf at a driving range, and a breathtaking eruption of music and emotion at a karaoke bar. Offering a vision of a place where the ghosts of the past meet the perils of the future as Matsumura struggles to build a new life while facing the dangers of radioactivity, the film will be screened for the first time in Turkey.

This public screening is free. Reservations are not accepted.
