Ayfer Bartu Candan is an associate professor of social anthropology at Boğaziçi University. Receiving her B.A. degree from Boğaziçi’s sociology and psychology departments in 1990, Candan earned her M.A and Ph.D. from the anthropology department at the University of California, Berkeley in 1997. Since then, she has taught at Koç University in İstanbul, University of California, Berkeley and Stanford University. Her research and teaching interests include urban anthropology, political anthropology, material culture studies, sociological and anthropological theory, space, power and gender. In İstanbul, she has conducted research on forms of social and spatial segregation, gated communities and urban transformation projects. Research in Çatalhöyük, a Neolithic town in central Turkey, has focused on the politics of archaeology and the past. Candan has served as a consultant on issues of cultural heritage and politics of the past in several European Union and World Bank projects.
