Le cri du coeur [The Heart’s Cry] (1994)
Director: Idrissa Ouédraogo
86 minutes
French; Turkish and English subtitles
Ibrahim Sow, who immigrated to France to make a better life almost five years ago, finally has the means to accommodate his wife Saffi and 11-year-old son. Leaving Mali where he’s grown up and his ill grandfather behind, young Moctar faces challenges to adjust this new life. Although born in France, he longs for his small village and begins seeing a hyena running on the streets of Lyon. When Moctar excitedly tries to explain “what he witnessed,” he becomes a laughing stock of his peers and eventually is asked to see the school psychologist. Nobody believes him, not even his parents until Moctar befriends with Paulo, a middle-aged free spirit who helps him understand what he’s going through.
Burkinabé director Idrissa Ouédraogo’s 1994 film Le cri de coeur [The Heart’s Cry] portrays the anxieties of exile and separation while pointing out the difficulties to overcome the alienation and discrimination in a society where racism still remains a prevalent problem.
Thursday Cinema is supported by Garanti BBVA Mortgage. Program is free. Reservations are not accepted.
