D’Est [From The East] (1993)
Director: Chantal Akerman
110 minutes
No dialogue

Shortly after the fall of the Iron Curtain and the collapse of the Soviet Bloc, Chantal Akerman made a journey through the countries of Eastern Europe from East Germany via Poland to the Baltic states, across Russia towards Moscow. Her aim was “filming everything that touched her before it was too late.” Alternating between still images and moving shots, day and night, summer and winter, beaches and streets, crowded public spaces and silent living rooms, the resulting semi-documentary is an observational chronicle of a crumbling world.

Shot on 16 mm without any dialogue or commentary, D’Est [From The East] (1993) unfolds like a collection of bleak postcards showing people and landscapes fixed in a seemingly endless state of waiting and repetition.

Thursday Cinema is supported by Garanti BBVA Mortgage. Program is free. Reservations are not accepted.
