The Otolith Group’s O Horizon, commissioned for the bauhaus imaginista project and coproduced with the Rubin Museum, focuses on the Visva-Bharati, which was founded by the 1913 Nobel laureate poet, novelist and painter Rabindranath Tagore in Santiniketan, West Bengal, India. Designed as a learning laboratory to interpret life, art and crafts with experimental practices, the school has transformed its surroundings as a result of its environmental pedagogy.

Combining elements from plastic arts, music, dance and literature, the 2018 film proposes that Tagore’s project maps onto the notion of terraforming—a term originating in science fiction and now more widely used—whereby a party reshapes the atmosphere of a place for their own needs. In studying this trajectory, the film extends The Otolith Group’s ongoing consideration of the Anthropocene.
