“We are used to hearing that human being is exceptional because it is un-natural, able to invent worlds which are culturally mediated, politically complex and hermeneutically enclosed. We assume that Nature, the non-human, lacks such capacities, but what if Culture was Nature all along? What if Nature re-presents itself through these same intimate involvements? What do we forfeit and what do we gain by shifting terms in this way?”
As part of SALT’s Study Groups, Ayşe Köklü invites Australia-based scholar Vicki Kirby to discuss the division between culture and nature with a specific focus on the emancipatory possibilities of overcoming this distinction. First presentation of the online workshop by Köklü, this public program will be held in English, and will be broadcasted at SALT Online YouTube Channel.
Vicki Kirby is Professor of Sociology at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. She has published widely in the areas of feminism, posthumanism, and deconstruction, especially on the question of the nature/culture distinction. She has an enduring fascination with how we might read deconstruction through the biological and physical sciences. Her books include Telling Flesh: The Substance of the Corporeal (1997), Judith Butler: Live Theory (2006), and more recently, Quantum Anthropologies: Life at Large (2011).
