The exhibition by Cooking Sections (Daniel Fernández Pascual and Alon Schwabe), one of this year’s Turner Prize nominees, is on view at SALT Beyoğlu.

Shortlisted for Britain’s prestigious Turner Prize this year, Cooking Sections (Daniel Fernández Pascual and Alon Schwabe) examines the critical impacts of food production and consumption habits on human induced climate change. The London-based duo’s ongoing CLIMAVORE: Seasons Made to Drift exhibition at SALT Beyoğlu delves into historic droughts in Anatolia, Mediterranization of the Black Sea, wetlands surrounding Istanbul, environmental consequences of fish farms, and the crisis of infertility from the early agricultural communities in the “Fertile Crescent” to contemporary Istanbul.

A series of online public programs in parallel to the exhibition will open the CLIMAVORE case studies to debate. On September 22, evolutionary geneticist Emre Keskin will give a talk (in Turkish) about the transformation of ecosystems and biodiversity in the seas. Artist Lucy Beech and historian of science Tamar Novick will be in conversation with Cooking Sections on ritual practices for increasing productivity in farm animals, as well as the phenomenon known as the freemartin on October 2. A conversation with James C. Scott, the Professor of Political Science and Anthropology at Yale University, will take place on October 6. Author of the renowned book, Against the Grain: A Deep History of Earliest States (Yale University Press, 2017), Scott will discuss the issues of sedentarism and nomadism in the context of early agricultural societies and state formation. All three programs will broadcast on SALT Online YouTube channel.

As part of CLIMAVORE: Seasons Made to Drift, there will be also an e-publication launch in September. Downloadable in PDF and EPUB formats via saltonline.org, the publication comprises the Turkish translations of six essays on contemporary frictions around in/fertility, commissioned by SALT and e-flux Architecture within the scope of the work Exhausted (2021).
