Exhausted Lectures

Online

One of Cooking Section’s five case studies for the exhibition CLIMAVORE: Seasons Made to Drift, Exhausted (2021) explored the crisis of infertility, through stories related both to the soil and the human body. The installation at SALT Beyoğlu visualizes attempts to increase the fertility of soil as well as focusing on various means of managing human fertility, with a time span that ranges from early agricultural societies to contemporary times. The Exhausted Lectures, which comprise discussions revolving around the objects and documents that are featured in the installation, are accessible on the web.

The first lecture by historian Ulaş Karakoç from the Economics Department at Kadir Has University focuses on the social and economic impact of the use of chemical fertilizers and agricultural policies directed at increasing fertility from the early 20th century onwards. The second lecture by historian Gülhan Balsoy from the History Department at Bilgi University examines how policies of population management and state interference with female reproduction during the period of modernization spanning the late Ottoman Empire and the Early Republic resulted in the control of the female body by the state. The last lecture by Cooking Sections discusses the items, which were presented in the exhibition, in terms of exhaustion of both the soil and the body.

CLIMAVORE was organized by SALT as part of the L’internationale’s Our Many Europes project.
