Open Rehearsal: DijitalLABperformans

The 90s Onstage

Salt Galata

October 4, 2022 – February 25, 2023

The Open Rehearsal program continues at Salt Galata as part of the exhibition The 90s Onstage, which presents a selection of art productions from 1990s Turkey with a focus on aspects of the stage and performance.

The program aims to underline the rehearsal process, in which collectives formed in the 1990s are welcome to use the space for private and open rehearsals. The ongoing program will exemplify how dialogue and encounter become essential tools in the projects they develop. During the program, such collectives and theater companies focusing on performance are invited to open up their rehearsals to visitors in the workshop spaces of Salt Galata. These open rehearsals aim to provide spatial support to the work of these formations and make production processes visible, offering an alternative to the result-oriented approach.

Following the presentations by GalataPerform, ÇATI Contemporary Dance Artists’ Association, Movement Atelier Company, iDANS International Festival of Contemporary Dance and Performance, and Çıplak Ayaklar Kumpanyası (ÇAK), the program will be hosting DijitalLABperformans between January 31-February 25. During this timeframe, the collective will share the outputs of their ongoing research project, Performance in a Posthuman Age, led by Şule Ateş (DijitalLABperformans) and Seda İlter (Birkbeck, University of London): four public talks accompanied by two open rehearsals for The Circus of Freaks dramaturgy laboratory.

During this public program, visitors can freely access the rehearsal area. Further information and updates on the Open Rehearsal program will be announced at saltonline.org and Salt’s social media accounts.

GalataPerform was founded in 2003 as an independent theater space on the first floor of a historical building in Galata’s Kuledibi neighborhood. Founded under the leadership of Yeşim Özsoy, GalataPerform has realized many projects, festivals and plays, including Görünürlük Projesi [Visibility Project] (1-8) and Yeni Metin Projesi ve Festivali [New Text Project and Festival] (1-9). In 2020, the collective left its venue in Galata and is now focusing on digitization projects.

ÇATI Contemporary Dance Artists’ Association was established in 2005 to contribute to the development of contemporary dance in Turkey and support creative works in the field. The members of the association initially came together in the studios of Istanbul City Theaters’ Theater Research Laboratory (TAL) in 1996. In 2001, the group left the TAL studio due to a need for a larger space for their work. Following an organizational structuring in 2005, the association began to collaborate with artists and institutions both from Turkey and abroad and realized several projects on education, research, artistic production, and social responsibility within the field of contemporary dance.

Movement Atelier is a performing company formed by Zeynep Günsür in 1999. Their projects concentrate on the body and its expressions through an interdisciplinary approach. The encounter of space-architecture, sound-music-movement, literature, and media is experimented on various levels. Dwelling on the need for creation in the field of performing arts, the company defines this common ground as a “movement theater”.

iDANS International Festival of Contemporary Dance and Performance was organized by the not-for-profit cultural initiative Bimeras in Istanbul between 2006-2014. At its every edition organized around a particular theme of inquiry, the festival featured around thirty international performances, including commissioned works, co-productions, and premieres. Besides live performances, the festival also hosted conferences, publications, public art projects, and educational programs, often in partnership with local and international organizations, and co-organized numerous transnational projects such as Jardin d’Europe, DEPARTS, and Europe in Motion, supported by the European Commission.

A dream country, Çıplak Ayaklar Kumpanyası was founded in Istanbul’s Beyoğlu district in 2003. Made up mostly of dancers with contemporary backgrounds, the company presented its first independent shows Why, İnçu, Çima, Neden…, followed by productions such as Mehmet Barış’ı Seviyor [Mehmet Loves Barış], Engin-ar, Şehirde [In the City], Ters Okyanus [Reverse Ocean], Kontrol [Control], Sen Balık Değilsin Ki [You’re Not a Fish], Kız Doğdu [A Girl is Born], Tüh!, Gölge Veri [Data Shadow] and Taşıdıklarımız [The Things We Carry]. Since its foundation, Çıplak Ayaklar Kumpanyası valued collaborative production and formed its own language. This production approach has enabled the company to establish its own audience while introducing amateur and professional dancers into the field. The company continues to work on new scores, in pursuit of its dream utopia.

Cihangir Akademi (2016) and DijitalLABperformans (2021) was founded by Şule Ateş to develop educational, research and design (production) projects on theater and performance. The two platforms have realized a series of educational and research projects, including Performance Design Academy, Storytelling and Contemporary Theater, Acting Techniques from Stanislavski to the Present, Quarantine 2020: Video Performance Series, and Performance and Digital Dramaturgy. Cihangir Akademi focuses on workshops and training programs on contemporary theater, while DijitalLABperformans organizes laboratories exploring the intersections between performance and various disciplines such as science, philosophy, and technology.

The 90s Onstage is organized as part of L’Internationale’s Our Many Europes program.
