“Can you go through a wall? Can you explode physically? Can you run in two opposite directions at the same time? Can you fall upwards? Can you fall upwards and downwards at the same time? When you try it, even if you prove yourself wrong, then there is the idea of movement and space occupation.” —Mehmet Sander

Programs parallel to the exhibition The 90s Onstage continue with a movement workshop led by choreographer and action architect Mehmet Sander. The workshop will begin with simple tasks and build trust among the participants, utilizing forces such as collision, risk-taking, maximum speed and gravity as initiators of the movement. Rejecting elements of emotion, music and acting in dance, Sander will test the participants physically, mentally and intellectually while focusing on different perceptions of body and space. The choreography of the movements emerging in the workshop, where the bodies will be positioned at 45, 90, and 180-degree angles, will be transformed into a final piece by Sander.

The workshop, open to participants aged 18 and over, does not require any dance training or background but involves a high amount of physical activity. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing. Please register via this form. Participation is limited to 20 people.

Mehmet Sander was born in Germany in 1967. He started dancing with Geyvan McMillen in Istanbul in 1984 and continued his dance education at the London Contemporary Dance School, California State University (Long Beach), Harvard University and American Dance Festival. He founded the Mehmet Sander Dance Company in 1990, performing throughout the United States and participating in numerous events and festivals such as the Holland Dance Festival, New Moves (Scotland), ICA’s National Look at Live Arts (UK), Istanbul Music Festival (Turkey), Klapstuk Festival (Belgium), Munich Dance Festival (Germany). His recent work includes the commission and presentation of original works Uncomfort Zone at Queen Mary, University of London (2011) and Impact at Fierce Festival (2012). He premiered his work Trust Fall at Bristol’s In Between Time Festival (2013) and performed his new solo BANG at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern (2013). In 2014 he led a two-day workshop at Tate Modern inspired by the museum’s Malevich exhibition. The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago commissioned and performed Mehmet Sander’s work Inner Space at the Kennedy Center and other prestigious venues.

The 90s Onstage is organized as part of L’Internationale’s Our Many Europes program.
