Space Dogs (2019)
Director: Elsa Kremser, Levin Peter
91 minutes
Russian; Turkish subtitles

Laika, a stray dog from the streets of Moscow, was selected to be the occupant of the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2 and became the first living being to orbit the Earth when she was launched into space on November 3, 1957. According to a legend, she returned to the planet as a ghost and has been roaming the city ever since. Filmed from a dog’s point of view, this hybrid documentary follows Laika’s trace and accompanies the journey of her descendants: two street dogs living in present-day Moscow. Their story is of intimate fellowship but also relentless brutality, interwoven with archival footage from the Soviet space program.

Written and directed by Elsa Kremser and Levin Peter, Space Dogs is a hybrid documentary that subverts the anthropocentric gaze to offer an unfamiliar view of the world. The film won the Youth Jury Award and Premio Speciale ISPEC Cultura (Special Mention) at the 72nd Locarno Film Festival, where it premiered.

Following Salt Beyoğlu’s Walk-in Cinema screening on Thursday, November 17 at 19.00, the film will be streamed online from Friday, November 18 to Sunday midnight, November 20 via saltonline.org.

This free-admission program takes place between November 3 and December 1 in Salt Beyoğlu’s Walk-in Cinema and at saltonline.org. All films included in the program will be streamed in their original language with Turkish subtitles, and can only be accessed online by audiences in Turkey.
