The projects supported by Salt Research Funds in 2022 will be opened up for discussion through a presentation program at Salt Galata. In the sessions moderated by the selection committee members Deniz Artun (Galeri Nev), Assoc. Prof. Bülent Batuman (Bilkent University), and Assoc. Prof. Burak Onaran (Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University), the researchers will present the methods and findings of their projects. The program will be held in Turkish and is open to everyone.

This year, Salt funded six projects selected from 153 applications focusing on Turkey’s urban, social, and economic history as well as post-1950s architecture, design, and art. Salt Research Funds have supported a total of 68 projects since 2013 to encourage research studies that develop original and interdisciplinary approaches to overlooked histories and contribute to the production of knowledge.

Bilge Beril Kapusuz Balcı: “Architecture, Politics, Aesthetics, and ‘Matters of Paper’: Çevre Magazine (1979-1981) and Its Unfinished Mediation in the World of Architectural Publishing”
B. Beril Kapusuz Balcı continues her postdoctoral research at the Department of Architecture and Arts, IUAV University of Venice. Her research focuses on the “matters of paper” of Çevre magazine, a short-lived journal of architecture and visual arts. She will discuss the intellectual emergence and structural organization of the journal, the network of relationships it established, and the unfinished mediation of its role around the ecologies of education and publishing.

Serim Dinç, İnci Olgun, and Sait Gözü: “Room-Courtyard-Neighborhood: The Latifiye Neighborhood in Mardin”
Serim Dinç, PhD student and research assistant at Istanbul Technical University Department of Urban and Regional Planning; İnci Olgun, lecturer at Mimar Sinan Faculty of Fine Arts; and Sait Gözü, who works on restoration projects related to “cultural heritage and conservation,” will examine the living spaces of Ensari, Özyardımcı, Tatlıdede, and Altun families in Latifiye neighborhood, Mardin from a socio-spatial perspective. They will evaluate the layered and dynamic structure of the historical urban landscape from the room to the courtyard and the neighborhood.

Başak Altın: “Lucia Moholy’s Ankara Years: A Woman Photographer in Exile”
Başak Altın received her master’s degree from Ankara University, Department of Radio, Television and Cinema, and conducts artistic research on cultural memory and visual archives. Her research project focuses on Lucia Moholy, an avant-garde photographer, librarian, and archivist who photographed the construction and productions of the Bauhaus School. Altın will interpret Lucia Moholy’s traces in Ankara, where she lived between 1952-58, focusing on the invisibility of women’s labor and the possibility of archival construction through her photographs, writings, and institutional records.

Efe Murat Balıkçıoğlu and Emirhan Eringen: “The Lost Avant-Garde: Yüksel Pazarkaya at the Stuttgart School of Concrete Poetry”
Poet-historian Efe Murad, who teaches Islamic history and writing at Wellesley College, and poet-director Emirhan Eringen, who holds a master’s degree in Visual Media Anthropology from Freie Universität Berlin, look into the work of Yüksel Pazarkaya, a member of the avant-garde Stuttgart School of concrete poetry. They will discuss his position within Turkey’s history of contemporary art and literature through his sound poetry and performance recordings, photographs, and publications.

Session III - Moderator: Burak Onaran

Can Memiş: “The Possibility of a Lost Realm of Memory as a Violation of the Right to Memory: The Sultanahmet Prison”
Can Memiş, who continues his master’s degree in Philosophy and Social Thought at Istanbul Bilgi University and his second bachelor’s degree in Law at MEF University, will examine the role of memorialization efforts in democratization processes through the example of the Sultanahmet Prison, where the right to memory as an urban right has turned into a social demand.

Hazal Özdemir: “They Vowed to Never Return: Photographic Documentation and Armenian Mobility at the End of Empire”
Hazal Özdemir is a PhD candidate in History at Northwestern University. She investigates the relationship between the city, migration, and photography, in this case, by examining a database of photographs required from Ottoman Armenians who migrated to the US for job opportunities between 1896-1908; where these photographs were produced, distributed, and archived.
