Istanbul Experimental
4th Istanbul International Film Festival
Salt Beyoğlu
November 23 – November 27, 2022
Salt is hosting the 4th Istanbul International Experimental Film Festival organized by Istanbul Experimental. This year’s program comprises the Competition section, which presents a selection of new works from contemporary experimental cinema, as well as screenings, talks, and a retrospective of Stan Brakhage.
Competition Films
Bringing together works of experimental cinema, the selection presents 58 short films from 30 countries in 5 different categories, from found footage and analog film to digital production practices and animation. Chaired by American producer and professor Gail Sonnenfeld, the jury members are Argentine curator-art historian Celina Marco, professor Elif Akçalı and video-photographer Ferhat Özgür from Turkey.
Retrospective: Stan Brakhage (1933-2003)
This year’s festival shines a spotlight on Stan Brakhage, one of the leading filmmakers of American avant-garde cinema. Curated by Florencia Incarbone, the program titled Delving Into Imagetic Immanence features selected emblematic films of Brakhage, including Dog Star Man, Eye Myth, and Mothlight. The program highlights his cinematographic and non-narrative approach, defying the cultural industry’s norms.
Talks
Rethinking the Archive organized in collaboration with the Chicago Film Archives and Media Burn Archive will focus on artists working with found and archival footage. In the first part, curator Adam Hart and filmmaker Elizabeth Coffman will tackle the history of protest videos and will continue with filmmaker Ted Hardin, followed by Davidson Gigliotti and Beryl Korot, co-founders of Radical Software and Raindance. Hardin, Associate Professor at Columbia College’s Department of Film and Television Arts, will discuss experimental film production techniques through the phrase “making strange”, which originated in Ireland to describe when “children turn from their parents.”
