Otan o Vagner synantise tis domates [When Tomatoes Met Wagner] (2019)
Director: Marianna Economou
72 minutes
Greek, French, English; Turkish subtitles
The Thessalian plain surrounded by mountains has always provided Greek farmers with food. However, the recent financial crisis has also left deep scars in this region. In Elias, a village of 33 inhabitants, two cousins seek to revitalize their hometown by developing their organic tomato cultivation. Using Richard Wagner’s compositions and traditional Greek music, Alexandros and Christos want to create an optimal environment for growing their organic tomatoes by playing music over speakers in the fields.
Director Marianna Economou underlines the importance and value of human relationships as well as humor in this bittersweet, surreal story about reinventing oneself in times of crisis and the power of the collective.
Following the Walk-in Cinema screening on Thursday, December 8 at 17.30, the film will be streamed online between December 12-18 via saltonline.org.
Salt’s Is this our last chance? program is supported by its founder Garanti BBVA, and is open to everyone. The films will be streamed in their original language with Turkish subtitles, and can only be accessed online by audiences in Turkey.
