Carlos Garaicoa works in and across various mediums and disciplines such as sculpture, photography, drawing, installation, architecture, urbanism, and text-based work. While his Cuban heritage serves as a point of departure, the full scope of Garaicoa’s artistic practice extends to a broader range of subject matter, including 20th-century utopianism, classic modernist forms and ideals, the infrastructures of centralized state planning, the vestiges of colonial architecture and urbanism, and the current-day shifting political and economic terrain of post-colonial globalism.
In this Who’s in town? program, Garaicoa will talk about his practice and recent projects. Creating intricate architectural models and installations that depict urban spaces, both real and imagined, while incorporating elements of decay, destruction, and rebuilding, Garaicoa challenges traditional boundaries through his innovative use of various mediums and encourages dialogue about how architecture and urbanism shape our lives and societies.
Programmed in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain in Ankara, this public talk will be held in English.
Carlos Garaicoa is a Spanish-Cuban artist based in Madrid. He studied at the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), Havana, specializing in photography and installations. He has presented his work at Goodman Gallery (London), Galleria Continua (San Gimignano), the Havana Biennial, Art Basel, and Fundación Botín (Santander), and his works have been included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Latin American Art (California), Centre Pompidou (Paris), and the Guggenheim Museum and MoMA in New York. Garaicoa’s more recent project, Las raíces del mundo, is exhibited at the Valletta Contemporary (Malta) in 2023.
