Screening Program:
"I'm tired of living in an Istanbul where nobody understands me"
Salt Beyoğlu
September 28 – October 26, 2023
Presented in parallel to the exhibition No Further Records: Reşad Ekrem Koçu and Istanbul Encyclopedia Archive, this screening program brings together a selection of five films from 1960s Istanbul. The program’s title is inspired by a news clipping that Reşad Ekrem Koçu quoted in an article on suicide incidents in the Istanbul Encyclopedia: “I’m tired of living in a world where nobody understands me.”
As Koçu was trying to complete the encyclopedia in the 1960s, urban life underwent rapid transformation. His feelings about this unfamiliar transformation can be traced in numerous encyclopedia articles: The historian’s sorrowful quotation also applies to him, as he also does not understand the city’s changing dynamics. The program follows Koçu’s melancholy to bring up social, cultural, and economic issues of the time, tracing what accumulates, what cannot gather, and what constantly changes in Istanbul through examples from cinema in Turkey.
This free-admission program will take place in the Walk-in Cinema at Salt Beyoğlu every Thursday at 19.00.
