Salt is hosting a conversation with Richard Gregory and Renny O’Shea, founding co-artistic directors of Quarantine, an ensemble of artists and producers based in Manchester, and Professor Zafer Yenal. The discussion will focus on the history and methodologies of Quarantine, and will be accompanied by examples of their work.
One of the leading contemporary performance companies in the UK, Quarantine has made work in public that concocts the circumstances to bring people together who might not usually share the same space. These micro-attempts at creating situations for “agonistic pluralism” work through a range of artistic strategies and forms, from walks, journeys, karaoke booths, shared meals, and cookery lessons to films, performances, and exhibitions. Often giving voice and space to those who might be rarely seen or heard in artistic arenas, Quarantine’s practice has evolved into a complex, fragmentary form of mass portraiture since the 1990s.
The talk follows a week’s residency in Istanbul, in collaboration with Onagöre, and is supported by the British Council to develop a version of No Such Thing, a project that Quarantine initiated in 2012, inviting the public to free lunch in exchange for conversation.
This free-admission program will be held in English and is open to everyone.
Quarantine is founded in 1998 by artists Richard Gregory and Renny O’Shea to make theatre, performance, and public events. Over the past 25 years, they’ve made 37 pieces of work of varying scale and toured to major arts venues and theatre festivals across the world, as well as curry cafes, libraries, and people’s kitchens.
Zafer Yenal is Professor of Sociology at Boğaziçi University. Yenal received his undergraduate degree from the Department of Economics at Middle East Technical University and completed his doctorate in sociology at Binghamton University. Yenal’s research interests include historical sociology, political economy, consumption studies, food culture, agriculture, rural sociology, and human geography.
Onagöre is a multidisciplinary creative studio offering publishing, archiving, organizational support, editorial consultancy, design, and production services. By maintaining a diversified focus, they activate a wide social network and provide fertile ground for alternative economic approaches. Onagöre has been propagating the principles of fair share and equal voice among actors of the cultural field in Istanbul since 2005. Working with artists and as artists, they experiment with innovative approaches and allocate their revenues for the support of young and promising artists.
