Turkey’s Bingöl region is an ecologically rich geography with its wetlands and flora. The locals collect and use wild plants and mushrooms growing in nature for sustenance and livelihood, based on the knowledge inherited across generations. A small number of people in different regions of Anatolia continue this ancient practice of foraging as a way of life.
Directors Adnan Faruk Turan and Roni Aran Adıbelli trace the indigenous foraging culture and the local’s relationship with their habitat. Featuring interviews with scientists, environmental researchers, and the natives, Toplayıcılar Bingöl [Foragers Bingöl] delves into a wide array of topics, such as the inherited knowledge of foraging culture, diverse usage of wild plants and mushrooms, alternative medicine and healing practices, overconsumption, and habitat loss.
Following the Walk-in Cinema screening on Thursday, February 29 at 19.00, the film will be streamed online between March 1-3 via saltonline.org.
Salt’s Is this our last chance? program is supported by its founder, Garanti BBVA, and is open to everyone. The films will be streamed in their original language with Turkish subtitles, and can only be accessed online by audiences in Turkey.
