Between the Rains (2023)
Director: Andrew H. Brown, Moses Thuranira
82 minutes
Swahili; Turkish subtitles
For the Turkana-Ngaremara community of Northern Kenya, becoming a warrior is a sacred and fundamental aspect of their culture. Kolei, a shepherd boy whose name translates to “living amongst the goats,” awaits his turn to start the Turkana’s traditional warrior process. However, when he fails a critical test, he is labeled a coward and loses the respect of the older warriors he idolizes. This disappointment leaves Kolei isolated from the community and prevents him from pursuing the life he truly desires.
Over four consecutive years, during a record-low annual precipitation period, directors Andrew H. Brown and Moses Thuranira follow Kolei’s coming-of-age story within his traditional culture, which is dramatically impacted by climate change. Due to the drought, wild predators are now preying on livestock, the only source of sustenance for the community. Dubbed a failure and sidelined, Kolei seeks redemption and status within the community by protecting his family’s livestock. Through Kolei’s journey to adulthood, Between the Rains looks into how climate change affects every aspect of the pastoral Turkana’s life, touching on land loss, water access, and human-wildlife conflict.
Following the Walk-in Cinema screening on Tuesday, March 5 at 19.00, the film will be streamed online between March 8-10 via saltonline.org.
Salt’s Is this our last chance? program is supported by its founder Garanti BBVA, and is open to everyone. The films will be streamed in their original language with Turkish subtitles, and can only be accessed online by audiences in Turkey.
