Vergiss Meyn Nicht [Lonely Oaks] (2023)
Director: Fabiana Fragale, Kilian Kuhlendahl, Jens Mühlhoff
100 minutes
German, English; Turkish subtitles
For the last ten years, environmental activists have occupied the ancient forest of Hambach in Western Germany as an energy company plans to clear the forest to expand a nearby lignite mine. In 2018, during a large-scale police operation to evict activists, film student Steffen Meyn, who was documenting the events at the site, was killed in a tragic accident.
Based on his footage shot over two years spent in Hambach Forest, the film follows Meyn into the activist world and explores nuanced approaches to complex political issues. Blending the footage Meyn shot on a 360-degree helmet camera with interviews with environmentalists about their experiences and perspectives, Vergiss Meyn Nicht [Lonely Oaks] is a powerful, thought-provoking documentary that invites the viewer to rethink one’s own personal and political commitments.
Following the Walk-in Cinema screening on Tuesday, March 12 at 19.00, the film will be streamed online between March 15-17 via saltonline.org.
Salt’s Is this our last chance? program is supported by its founder Garanti BBVA, and is open to everyone. The films will be streamed in their original language with Turkish subtitles, and can only be accessed online by audiences in Turkey.
