Maffy’s Jazz (2022)
Director: Deniz Yüksel Abalıoğlu
57 minutes
Turkish; English subtitles

Muvaffak “Maffy” Falay was a renowned jazz trumpeter who left his homeland for Sweden at an early age to pursue his passion for music. He was coveted by jazz legends such as Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk, and shared the stage with Quincy Jones, Kenny Clarke, and Francy Boland, among others. Among the few remaining members of a bygone generation, he led a solitary life in his one-room apartment in the suburbs of Stockholm and passed away in February 2022.

Maffy’s Jazz traces Maffy’s relationship with music and follows him candidly in different time frames, witnessing his alienation as he seeks to redefine his existence at a time when his generation, culture, and music slowly fade away.

Produced and directed by Deniz Yüksel Abalıoğlu, the documentary film won the Best Director Award at the 8th Ravenna International Soundscreen International Film Festival and the Best Documentary Award at the 21st Boston Turkish Film Festival.

This free-admission screening is presented as part of International Jazz Day.
