Eight Palestinian families living in East Jerusalem use CCTV cameras on their rooftops to watch their neighborhood. The residents comment on these images of surveillance as they narrate their surroundings, daily lives, and how they are affected by the ongoing occupation. The houses become “tripods” for the cameras, which allow the residents to adjust their distance and proximity to their neighbors.

CAMP’s critical documentary Al jaar qabla al daar [The Neighbour Before the House] is a series of videos probing into surveillance systems, communities, and the boundaries between public and private. The film’s CCTV aesthetics foregrounds the separation and control experienced by the Palestinian people. The footage shot on PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) CCTV security camera, a device that shapes the neighborhood’s regime of visibility, becomes a witness and evidence of the colonial violence in the region.

Following the Walk-in Cinema screening on Saturday, April 27 at 17.00, the film will be streamed at saltonline.org between April 29-May 5. The film will be streamed in its original language with Turkish and English subtitles, and can be accessed online globally.
