Salt is hosting the 1st International Symposium on Women in Audio Visual Culture, organized by the Istanbul Okan University Cinema and Television Program and the Public Relations and Advertising Program. The symposium aims to create a platform to enrich critical thinking and raise awareness regarding today’s gender imbalance within the audiovisual practice through the participants’ questions, research, and field experiences.
The first session will examine the current historical narrative of culture in literature, the arts, music, and cinema, which male voices have predominantly written; the session will also aim to formulate an unwritten “memory of references.” Following the screening of the female directors’ four short films, the panel discussion with the directors will expand on the idea of the “reference” in their creative process.
The second panel will explore the representations of women in narratives that ensure the continuity of the collective conscious and unconscious from an epistemological point of view. The discussion will also include how creative works are documented and how contemporary women’s stories can be transformed into collective memories. In the last session, Istanbulimpro will perform Bir Zamanlar Kadın: Henüz Yazılmamış Bir Kadın Hikayesi [Once Upon a Time: A Woman’s Story Not Yet Written], an improvisation play in which a novel story is enacted according to the audience’s imagination.
