Workshop IV

Salt is hosting a workshop titled “Urban Sound Stations” organized by Manifold. Facilitated by Furkan Keçeli, the program will focus on urban sounds one hears daily but does not pay attention to, or sounds one sometimes classifies as noise. The workshop will comprise studies on listening, remembering, expressing, and synthesizing sound.

This free-admission program will be held in Turkish. Participation is limited to 10 people. Priority will be given to participants with basic Ableton Live knowledge. Participants are expected to bring a laptop with Ableton Live installed and a headset they can use during the workshop. Click here to apply.

PROGRAM

10.00-10.30 Urban Walk

The program will start with a walk from Karaköy Pier to Galata Tower. During the walk, designed to last approximately 20 minutes, participants will be asked to carefully follow the route and the sounds, take reminder notes, and/or make drawings. Simultaneously, the entire walk will be recorded, and the sounds perceived throughout the walk will be documented.

11.00-13.00 Mapping

The second part of the workshop will begin with a recollection of the sounds through the notes taken during the walk. All identifiable “sound stations” will be marked on a map depicting the route, which will be turned into a sound map through collective effort. The recordings and the sound map will be compared, followed by a group discussion around the idea of noise, the connection between sound and memory, and the memorability of sound.

13.00-14.00 Break

14.00-17.00 Synthesizing

The walking route will be divided into sections based on the “sound stations” and the distance/time between them. The facilitator will introduce a sound synthesis method related to the workshop’s conceptual framework, and each participant will synthesize and transform their share of the sound material with the support of the facilitator.

This workshop is carried out with the support of SAHA.
